A refereed journal (also called a peer-reviewed journal) publishes an article only after it is judged or refereed by at least two experts in the field. This process helps ensure that the published article is reliable and timely, and that it reflects solid scholarship in a particular field. A non-refereed journal may not use such rigorous screening processes but it may still be considered scholarly. Such non-refereed scholarly journals, some of which are published by professional organizations, contain articles written by experts in a discipline and are concerned with academic study and research.
